Green Commercial Cleaning’s Walter makes headlines for his polished performance

Thursday, April 9th, 2015

One of our dedicated cleaners, Walter Oxendale, has hit the headlines after helping to keep Hull Collegiate School spick and span for almost 20 years.

Walter, who has appeared in the Hull Daily Mail, is a familiar face to staff and students at the Anlaby school, never missing an inch when it comes to making their premises sparkle.

Remarkably, he has never had a day off through illness, with his only absence forced upon him during the floods of 2007 which brought East Yorkshire to a standstill.

Our Walter prides himself on his polished performance – always making sure his jobs are carried out to the best of his ability by going the extra mile.

Walter, 53, of Anlaby, said: “I never imagined I would stay this long. I have enjoyed it over the years and it’s very satisfying. I try my best and take pride in what I do.

“I’m probably like part of the furniture here now. The staff and students are very nice and have been very good to me, and the people I work with are what make the job great. They are like an extended family.

“I was off one day for the floods in 2007 and that’s only because it was impossible to get through. That’s the only day off I have ever had. I really try not to be ill.”

Walter was originally employed by the school but became an employee of Green Commercial Cleaning when we took over the management of the school contract, remaining in the position he loves.

He works from 4pm to 6.45pm, Monday to Friday, and sets straight to work, ensuring the school, based in a Victorian Mansion in 12 acres of land at Tranby Croft, is looking its best at all times.

Joe Rymer, facilities manager at Hull Collegiate School, said he is now considered one of the team.

“Walter is an absolute gem. He gets on well with all the staff and his face is well known around the school. If he sees we need a hand with something, he’s there,” he said.

“Twenty years is a fantastic milestone. He is part of the furniture here and it wouldn’t be the same without him. He is an absolute credit to his employers.”

Green Commercial Cleaning contract manager Gary Evans said Walter is a fantastic team player.

“I would love to have a whole team of Walters,” he said.

“Walter is very highly thought of, and when the school staff buy each other presents at Christmas, he gets one too.

“He’s never off, never late and never grumbles. No matter what the job is, he is always willing. A perfect employee.

“We are looking forward to working with Walter for many years to come. We are going to make a big fuss of him and it’s important to recognise it. We might even get him a golden mop!”
